![]() (From Old Corral image collection) From L-to-R, Roy Barcroft has the drop on veteran supporting player Paul Hurst and star Monte Hale in PRINCE OF THE PLAINS (Republic, 1949). Paul Causey Hurst (1888-1953) began his work in Hollywood around 1915, and during the silent era, he not only appeared in various films, but did some script writing and directing. During the 1930s and 1940s, he became entrenched as a supporting player, often in comedic roles, and portraying characters that were cantankerous, ornery and not too bright ... and his style always reminded me of W. C. Fields. When you watch GONE WITH THE WIND, you'll see Hurst as the Yankee soldier who is shot by Scarlette on the steps inside Tara. Near the end of the B western era, Hurst was the sidekick to Monte Hale in most of Hale's brief starring series at Republic. Hurst committed suicide in 1953. Les Adams has Hurst identified in 138 sound films --- that number includes 44 westerns. You may want to go to the In Search Of ... page on the Old Corral and then to the California Death Records database. There you will find a record for: Paul Causey Hurst, born 10/15/1888 in California, Mother's maiden name of Martin, and he passed away on 2/27/1953. There is no corresponding record in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI). Jim Tipton's Find A Grave website has a photo of the marker for Paul Hurst who is interred at Smith Mountain Cemetery, Dinuba, California: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=9023324
![]() (From Old Corral image collection) Above, from L-to-R are: Syd Saylor, Verna Hillie, Hal Taliaferro (Wally Wales), Ken Maynard, Jack Cheatham, Al Bridge and Jack Rockwell in the chapterplay, MYSTERY MOUNTAIN (Mascot, 1934). Syd Saylor (sometimes Sid Saylor) (1895-1962) (real name: Leo Sailor) did occasional sidekick roles in B westerns starring John Wayne, Tex Ritter, Bob Baker and Kermit Maynard. He was also an original member of Republic's Three Mesquiteers (but replaced by Max Terhune after doing the initial Mesquiteers entry). He also was the helper to Bob Steele in a quartet of oaters done by PRC in 1946. Les Adams has Saylor identified in about 234 sound films --- that number includes 64 westerns and 3 cliffhangers. You may want to go to the In Search Of ... page on the Old Corral and then to the California Death Records database. There you will find a record for: Sid Saylor, born 5/24/1895 in Illinois, and he passed away on 12/21/1962. There is a corresponding record in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI), but it shows the spelling of his name as Syd Saylor, and his death occurring in January, 1963. Jim Tipton's Find A Grave website notes that Saylor is interred at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park, North Hollywood, California: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=11845356

Saylor's film career spanned from the mid 1920s until the early 1960s. Max Terhune replaced Saylor in the next film of the series.
![]() (From Old Corral image collection) The fumbling, bumbling Emmett 'Pappy' Lynn (18??-1958) appeared with Tim Holt at RKO and Don Barry at Republic. Above, Lynn is shown as the whiskered sidekick to Eddie Dean in THE CARAVAN TRAIL (PRC, 1946). Later still, he was the helper named 'Buckskin' to Jim Bannon in the last series of Red Ryder films that were done by Eagle-Lion around 1950. Lynn also did bit parts in some A films such as his role as Ava Gardner's printer 'Josh' in the Clark Gable LONE STAR (MGM, 1952). I always chuckle when Lynn is on screen. Give him a line or two of dialog --- he'd add some wild or incredulous facial expressions and swing his arms to and fro. And sure enough --- he'd steal the scene. There's additional lobby cards showing Lynn in his appearances with Eddie Dean. Click HERE, HERE and HERE. You may want to go to the In Search Of ... page on the Old Corral and then to the California Death Records database. There you will find a record for: Emmett Lynn, born 2/14/1897 in Iowa, and he passed away on 10/20/1958. There is no corresponding record in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI). Jim Sorensen and Dale Crawford, who have provided lots of grave marker photos on the Old Corral, advised that Lynn is buried at Valhalla Memorial Park, North Hollywood, California, but his gravesite has no marker. Les Adams has Lynn identified in 137 sound films --- that number includes 82 westerns and 3 cliffhangers.

![]() (From Old Corral image collection) Before his days with Arkansas 'Slim' Andrews at Monogram, Tex Ritter's most frequent screen pal was Horace Murphy (1880-1975) (above, right) who portrayed characters named 'Stubby' or 'Ananias'. On the left is silent film clown Snub Pollard, who was also a helper to Tex, and went by the moniker of 'Pee Wee'. This scene is from ROLLIN' PLAINS (Grand National, 1938). There's a profile on William Horace Murphy in the 'Villains and Supporting Players' section of the Old Corral. Harry 'Snub' Pollard (real name: Harold Fraser) (1886 or 1889 - 1962) was a full-fledged star of silent comedies, and began his career with Essanay around 1910. Pollard is best remembered for his work at Hal Roach's studio where he worked with Harold Lloyd as well as in his own comedy series. Les Adams has Murphy identified in about 120 sound films --- that number includes 95 westerns and 2 serials. Les' sound film count for Pollard is 104 films of which 34 are westerns and 3 are chapterplays. Horace Murphy: http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0614303/
