Gene Autry Trivia:
  • Gene's full name is most often listed as Orvon Gene Autry. But his real name is Orvon Grover Autry.
  • His first starring film - THE PHANTOM EMPIRE (Mascot, 1935) serial.
  • His first starring western - TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS (Republic, 1935).
  • His last starring western - LAST OF THE PONY RIDERS (Columbia, 1953).
  • He did two Cinecolor westerns, THE STRAWBERRY ROAN (Columbia, 1948) and THE BIG SOMBRERO (Columbia, 1949).
  • Gene's first screen kiss was with Barbara Pepper in his third starring film, SAGEBRUSH TROUBADOUR (Republic, 1935); his second kiss was with Ann Rutherford in THE SINGING VAGABOND (Republic, 1935); Frances Grant was the third recipient of an Autry kiss in OH, SUSANNA! (Republic, 1936). In addition to those films, Gene had a bunch more screen kisses - a couple of additional examples: he kisses Hope (Irene) Manning in OLD CORRAL (Republic, 1936) and Maxine Doyle in ROUND-UP TIME IN TEXAS (Republic, 1937).
  • He had 90 starring films: Mascot (1), Republic (56), 20th Century-Fox (1) and Columbia (32).
  • And the filmography below should also answer the question: "did Gene play himself in all his STARRING films?" You'll find that answer in the right most column (titled Autry Role).

TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS (Republic, 1935) was Gene Autry's first starring B-western, and the above title lobby card shows Gene on the original Champion (with that unique face blaze and three white socks). About six months earlier, his first starring film was released, THE PHANTOM EMPIRE (Mascot, 1935) serial.

Above is a re-release lobby card from Gene Autry's GOLD MINE IN THE SKY (Republic, 1938). From left to right are Smiley Burnette, Autry, a young George Montgomery (peering over Champion's saddle), partial face may be Frankie Marvin, unidentified player with his back to the camera (may be Craig Reynolds). The moustached guy on the right is John Beach. An on the far right is a partial face of Art Dillard.

Above standing are Frank McCarroll (left) and a clean shaven Tex Terry (right) with six-guns leveled at Gene Autry. At the desk is Charles Evans. Lobby card from TWILIGHT ON THE RIO GRANDE (Republic, 1947). This was one of five films that Gene did for Republic after he returned from World War II duty. He then left Republic, formed his own production company, and released new films through Columbia Pictures.

Footnote: some filmographies on Autry list him as one of the western TV and movie 'guest stars' in the Bob Hope comedy ALIAS JESSE JAMES (United Artists, 1959).  This is incorrect.

Boyd Magers has a review of this film and mentions "in the final shootout: Hugh 'Wyatt Earp' O'Brian, Ward 'Wagon Train' Bond, Roy Rogers, Gary Cooper, Fess 'Davy Crockett' Parker, Jay 'Tonto' Silverheels, James 'Gunsmoke' Arness and Gail 'Annie Oakley' Davis. Gene Autry and James Garner are often credited as being among these cameos but are definitely not. Jim Davis plays brother Frank James with flaming Rhonda Fleming as Jesse (and Bob's) girl."

Got an e-mail from Ron McKnight, who had the MGM/UA video, and confirms that Autry and Garner are not in this film.
