Prolific Performers Who Were NOT In The Hoppy Films Les Adams did an interesting run on his film and performer databases. Les writes: "I remembered that Charlie King's half-zillion films didn't include any Hopalong Cassidy entries. Got to wondering if any of the other players who were in over two hundred westerns also didn't work in the Hoppy's. So I ran a search on the 66 Hoppy films, and found that among the 471 different players I have credited in that series, Budd Buster, Edmund Cobb and Jack Ingram (200+ club) joined King among the missing. Bud Osborne only had one. Those five performers did 1300+ western roles among them and only had one Cassidy film appearance." |
Special thanks to Martin Grams, Jr. for the following info on the Hopalong Cassidy radio series. Martin is the author of several books including one on Radio/TV's HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL. |
The name 'Hopalong Cassidy' was familiar in every American home during the forties and fifties. The hero in black rode across the plains - with his horse Topper and his sidekick California Carlson - in a fight for law and order, whenever bad guys needed a lesson taught. Syndicated by Commodore Productions and Artists, Inc., this radio program was broadcast for a total of one-hundred and four episodes. Hopalong Cassidy made his first radio appearance on the Forecast series in 1941, in an attempt to adapt the popular movie western to radio. The audition show never made it to a regular prime-time run, and the idea was scrapped. Later, in 1948, Commodore began transcribing radio dramas using William Boyd in the lead role of Hopalong.
The role of California Carlson was played by Andy Clyde for the first twelve episodes, as well as episodes 14 - 20, 22 23, 25, 26, and 53 to 104. Joe DuVal acted out the role of California for episodes 28 - 35 and 37 - 52. Hopalong Cassidy did not have a sidekick for episodes 13, 21, 24, 27 and 36.
Scripts were written by Buckley Angel, Dean Owen, Robert T. Smith, Howard Swart, Wayne Yarnell, Harold Swanton, John Barkley, and numerous others. Episode twenty-five was based on the Hopalong Cassidy motion picture SILENT CONFLICT (1948). Episode three was based on THE MARAUDERS (1947), episode twenty-nine from BORROWED TROUBLE (1948), and episode thirty-nine from SINISTER JOURNEY (1948). Albert Glasser supplied the music.
The list of broadcasts below show two sets of dates. The first date is the date of transcription (the recording date) and the second date is the actual broadcast date over the Mutual Broadcasting Network. They were not broadcast in the same order as they were recorded. Because the series was syndicated, the dates may have varied across the country, and some stations may have even added sponsor breaks, such as General Foods for the first nine months of 1950, and Cella Vineyards in a short run of repeats over CBS' Mountain States network. First broadcast over Mutual as a Sunday afternoon feature at 4 pm, EST, the program went to CBS 8:30 pm as of September 30, 1950.

I say almost because there are two episodes that are not out in circulation and are VERY hard to find --- Episode #46 and Episode #88.
